Amir Taheri has written extensively for the New York Post and several other publications since his return to Paris after the arrival of Ayatollah Kohmeini in Iran 1979. He is considered an expert on matters related to Persia, both historical and diplomatic. His recent explanation into the mindset of those building a ‘cultural center’ at the foot of ‘Ground Zero’ is outstanding in its clarity and range of thought, most columnists and foreign policy experts do not grasp the tenants of any faith, let along Islam.
Since September 11, 2010 Amir Taheri has taken great pains in his columns to explain to his readers the POWER OF PRIMITIVISM IN ISLAM. Although most writers understand the role of tribalism throughout the Near East, most do not understand the ARCHAIC MINDSET of the Islamists, especially the militant Islamists who perpetuate a rigid historicism in their utopian drive to emulate Muhammed.
Muslims treat the tribal era of Muhammed and his early successors as the golden age of Islam. Although many educated Muslims understand the Cordoba Caliphate in Spain as the apex of an ecumenical Islam, most Muslims adhere to the mythic embrace of the tribal success of Muhammed and his early followers as key to the mindset that drives contemporary Muslims.
Taheri has revealed that every structure in Islam is dominated by Islamic faith and its rituals. The building of Mosques and other structures has precise codes and character. “A Mosque is a one story gallery built around an atrium with a ‘mihrab’ (a niche facing Mecca) and at least one minaret.
There are other Islamic structures such as ‘harams, zawiyyahs, husseinyiahs, and takiyahs. All obey similar rules regarding structure.”
THE BUILDING AT GROUND ZERO IS KNOWN TO MUSLIMS AS ‘DAR-AL-TABLIGH’ OR HOUSE OF PROSELYTIZING. In other words, the 13 story multifunctional building next to ground zero could not any of the above, most certainly not mosque.
THERE IS NO SUCH THING IN ISLAM AS A CULTURAL CENTER!
THE PROPOSED STRUCTURE IN ISLAM IS KNOWN AS A RABAT. A CONNECTOR.
The first ‘rabat’ appeared at the time of the Prophet. It is an area of prayer most often built on the site where successful proselytizing has occurred.
The Prophet Muhammad imposed his rule on parts of Arabia through as series of ‘ghazvas’ or raids. The purpose of such raids was to terrorize the infidels and convince them that their civilization was doomed and force them to submit to Islamic rule. After each successful ‘ghazvas’ or raid, a ‘RABAT’ was built. This place of prayer was built to help Muslims prepare for the next raid/ghazvas.
ISLAMISTS THROUGHOUT THE NEAR EAST REFER TO THE SEPTEMBER 11 ATTACKS AS ‘GHAZVA’. THE TERRORISTS WHO CARRIED THEM OUT ARE REFERRED TO AS ‘SHAHIDS’/MARTYRS.
THUS THE BUILDING NEXT TO GROUND ZERO IS A RABAT AND WOULD BE USED IN ACCORDANCE WITH ISLAMIC TRADITIONS. Of course one cannot mistake the ideological significance that such a building has in the minds of Muslims.
Taheri has written that ‘a ‘rabat’ in the heart of Manhattan demonstrates a thirst for visibility, translated into increasingly provocative forms of presence assisted by First Amendment protections. In case you thought this just symbolic, Taheri has written on a quest Muslims had in demonstrating their political presence in Paris recently by closing down an entire street in rush hour for prayer during Ramadan.
Deep in the heart of each individual runs the drive for utopian unity, many times demonstrated as fascism, in the need to coerce others. We are witnessing the latest fascist drive in contemporary Islam.
